Throughout his career, Van Ludwig’s work has centred around wood of Vancouver Island. Relating natural progression of the forest in his work. The basic elements being earth, wind, fire, water with the sun acting as the actuator to his pieces. The Arbutus burl was salvaged from a previous logging site burn pile where the species has little to no commercial value. Through moisture and sun, the piece is aged and bent to where it wants to be. Destabilizing is a natural occurrence in Arbutus. The worm hole patterns are cleaned to reveal intricate patterns. Depending on orientation, the experience of light will be vastly different.
