Portfolio - Wolfe Credenza
Wolfe Credenza is a one-of-a-kind collaboration between Autonomous Furniture and Coast Salish artist Bear Horne, created alongside lead designer Kirk Van Ludwig. The piece brings together contemporary furniture design and Coast Salish carving traditions through a shared respect for material, meaning, and craft.
Crafted in solid black walnut, the credenza features hand-carved cedar door fronts depicting a double wolf—an important symbol within Coast Salish culture, representing guidance, strength, and collective purpose. Horne’s original seven-foot-long carving was carefully adapted by Autonomous Furniture’s craftsmen into functional door fronts, preserving the integrity of the artwork while integrating it seamlessly into the furniture form. The carving was fumed and torched to achieve a deep blackened finish, offering contrast against the warmth of the walnut case.
Commissioned for a private client in Mexico, the Wolfe Credenza stands as a contemporary expression of Canadian craftsmanship and Indigenous artistry. Bear Horne and Kirk Van Ludwig plan to continue their collaborative work on future pieces in 2026.
