The Art of Living: from the eyes of Kirk Van Ludwig
I recently brought home a coffee table for an upcoming video shooting at our house. Sitting on the couch, well, lying…I was staring at the table at eye level. It occurred to me how seldom I get to enjoy the furniture we design and build.
Examining the coffee table, touching the metal curved legs, exploring the edges of the burl, I was thinking, holy shit this is a nice table, can’t believe this hasn’t sold. Now you might be thinking, ‘of course Kirk, it’s your table’, however it’s an entirely different experience coming up with a design, engineering, and crafting. The intimate level is based on creating and not living.
Over the last 3 years, I’ve delivered some amazing furniture, many times wishing I could have it for myself, and sad for it to go. But I guess that defeats the point of having a design build Furniture Company. But you can see the conundrum. I guess it’s a good barometer, if I seem glum on delivery, consider that a good thing.
